The Great Pyramid of Giza, completed around 2570 BC, was one of the tallest structures ever built, reaching a height of 481 feet (146.7 meters). The earliest known tall buildings were ziggurats of ancient Mesopotamia, built about 3000 BC. The first true skyscraper was built in Chicago in 1885, and as the popularity of these tall and impressive buildings has grown, so too has the science and engineering that goes into constructing them.
